The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney is a blackly comic, filthy, vibrant and gloriously moving story. Published in 2015 this fictional debut novel by Lisa McInerney won Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction. Full of awkward coincidence with no surprises The Glorious Heresies takes us deep into the dark heart of Ireland’s depressed port city of Cork. As per The Glorious Heresies review in Amazon, the overall review rate has the outcome of 4 stars. Being a 1st ever novel of Lisa Mclnerney and earning average of 4 stars at the very beginning of the journey proves the book to be good enough deserving appraisal.
Ryan Cusack, 15 years old sharp and handsome drug dealer falls in a turbulent relationship with a classmate named Karine D’Arcy. No doubt, Karine like him too. There is an indescribable horror that is huge than life neighbor. Jimmy is the governor of the criminal underbelly of Cork. His mother Maureen Phelan, unintended commits a murder of an unfortunate intruder. Now Jimmy is in charge of his mother’s cover-up. So to clean up the mess created by the dead body, he hires Tony to help him. This accidental murder interconnects 5 Irish characters by chance or choice that does bring more danger and mayhem. Eventually, this is a colorful tale of sex, drugs, alcohol, crime, and religion. The Glorious Heresies is delivered with such flamboyant confidence with it’s ‘in your face’ earthy and gritty style.
I must say, McInerney, is really capable of creating a cracking set of unbelievably complex and fascinating characters. Although every character might not be likable, yet you find them desperately compelling. Not only filled with crime, drugs, alcoholics, etc, there is more to excite. The book The Glorious Heresies is a full pack of shameless-fearless-gritty-glorious-naughtiness. The book covers a deeper moral complex story that with the time make us realize there is a major motive for all this mayhem in Cork.
The book depicts that the mafia feel remorse for their deeds. I realized this big brassy story felt both dreamlike and realistic. There’s a hilarious point at the beginning of the story that is Ryan’s ‘reason’ for being a drug dealer. He doesn’t want to become an alcoholic like his father Tony. I guess it’s really a funny reason.
I found the book to be inappropriate for the readers who are easily shocked. However, for the rest of us, this is an outstanding read where a group of characters are in search of absolution. The beautiful and fierce prose, often lyrical, is a real joy. You can download The Glorious Heresies pdf from the link mentioned below.
