Written by an Indian Writer Chetan Bhagat, Half Girlfriend is a story of love, struggle, helplessness, and pain. Enthralling the readers with the sweet and simple story, Bhagat has accomplished in depicting the unclearness about relationship in most of contemporary girls and boys. However, that’s not it, Half Girlfriend novel has more to give. The characters feel so real that their story; their struggle, perception, emotion, and many more, will pinch your heart every moment.
The plot covers a story of a boy named Madhav who is from rural Bihar and is very weak in speaking English. And the other person whom the story keeps in highlight is Riya who is rich, elite and very good in English. Both of them get an admission into St. Stephens College through sports quota. They have their friendship formed through playing basketball. Madhav is attracted by Riya and falls in love with her. Madhav wants Riya to in a relationship with him bur Riya refuses. However, Riya agrees to be his half-girlfriend that is more than a friend but less than a girlfriend.
As time moves on they develop a better friendship. But things turn black for Madhav as he tries to be physical with Riya and Riya doesn’t like it. Both Madhav and Riya are tempered, but gradually Madhav feels sorry and tries to contact her. Madhav’s bad, he starts getting ignored and avoided by her. One day, Madhav receives her call and invited to meet her at their favorite place; India Gate. Madhav excitedly runs to meet her to find that she is leaving for the UK and is soon getting married. This breaks his heart. Afterward, Madhav is left alone without her, he completes his graduation and returns back to his birthplace. However, even after days pass he is still into Riya and cannot get rid of her thoughts.
After years and years, they cross into each other in one of the hotels in Patna. He finds Riya has been divorced and is recently working in a toothpaste company. Once more both of them fall for each other. Madhav takes Riya to meet his mother. Unfortunately, his mother hates Riya and doesn’t want them to be together. Madhav requests his mother to be kind to her as he loves her very much. Also, Madhav requests Riya to guide him with English as he has to prepare a presentation for a grant to Bil Gates Foundation. As he successfully wins the grant, he comes to find Riya is gone once more. Madhav finds a note left behind by Riya revealing she has been diagnosed with cancer and doesn’t have many days left to live. Although the notes portrayed she was struggling with cancer, the truth was to leave Madhav behind as his mother won’t accept her and hence hides the truth.
Devastated once more, Madhav has a gut feeling Riya is still alive and might be performing somewhere at a bar of New York as one of her past dream was to do so. Hence, with fading hope, Madhav flies to New York and every night visited different bars in a hope of finding her. On his last day, he actually finds her singing at a bar and confronts his love towards her and Riya to confront her love towards him. Now just as a fairy tale, they live happily ever after. Moreover, they even have a child together.
Bhagat has cleverly weaved the origin of Madhav as in reality most of the people from rural Bihar or from any other rural territory do not have an idea of speaking English fluently. Hence, those people keep themselves into Madhav’s shoes and feel the struggle and indifferences regarding class.
