Published in the era of gold rushes and adventures in unexplored tracts of land, 1903 AD, Call of the Wild by Jack London is a fine work of literature. Packed with the adventure the story is led by a dog named Buck. This book absolutely shakes the world of the readers’ who go mad for dogs. The struggles Buck faces, fights for survival and many more are what make the story shrink through readers skin. Besides, Call of the Wind novel unfolds the tale of wildlife, love, friendship, adventure, camp, etc. Narrated from the perspective of a dog, the story portrays the darker messages of boundless greed, ambition, and the necessity to adapt the change.
The plot begins with a ranch in Santa Clara Valley, California when Buck gets stolen from his home. Buck who was huge in size, shaggy, had strong muscles, and strong of heart, was then sold into service as a sled dog in Alaska. He, in the frozen land now has to face a tough life; he must survive in a real competitive and tough world where for the bare necessities of survival tooth and claw fight takes place. Before this incident, Bucked in his puppy life, had lived a life of pampered pet, everything was smooth and comfortable; he loved to hunt, swim in the cemented pool. Moreover, this innocent puppy was unaware of hardship, brutality, and labor. Eventually, Buck quickly becomes aware of his physique and intelligence that put him on the vantage side. He successfully defeats his arch-enemy Spitz and becomes the leader among sled dogs.
Later, Buck is sold once more to a stupid family of Charles who knows nothing regarding sledding and caring for the animals. Jack London through this family of Charles presents the greed and stupidity; they are simply caught up with the fever of the Klondike Gold Rush and striking it rich. At the initial part of the journey having no idea of how long the journey will take, they stupidly overfed the dogs thinking the dogs will endure long workday but eventually they ran out of feeds and the dogs had to starve. Fortunately, Buck is once more under the care of John Thornton, a kind and loving man. During his time with his master Thornton, he experiences wilderness and becomes familiar with the wolves from the area. Although Buck loved his company, he felt the call of wilderness somewhere inside. One night Buck returns from hunting to find his new master murdered by the vicious Yee-Hats. At-last, Buck realizes he is not under the care of anyone, so he follows the voice of his heart and follows the wolves into the wild to live as a part of the pack.
I found Call of the Wild novel to be very engaging although it’s short. This marvelous book could turn out to an educational material for the younger ones. London has portrayed the strong connection between human and its best friend dog, and somewhere it contrasts by portraying the cruelty of humans. This tale of leadership and dignity will keep the younger ones gripped to the book. You can feel free to perform Call of the Wild book download from the link provided below;
